I can see how this play would have been an unbearable and boring exercise in gender theory if not for Seigner and Amalric. It soon becomes apparent that Vanda (Seigner) came in late for a reason; she already knows her lines, and has a strong opinion about the sexual and gender politics of the play, and the book it’s based on, and apparently wishes to personally torment Thomas (Amalric) about it. Thomas makes the mistake of not taking her opinions to heart, insisting the play was what was “in the book,” and not something that was in himself.

My reaction was entirely different: that adaptation of Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s seminal novel from 1870 left a marked impression on me and so did the novel itself
