It wasn't, but I was really happy anyway. Koshchei The Deathless is a new series about Koshchei, who we’ve seen in previous issues of Hellboy comics. Koshchei the Deathless is a figure from Slavic folklore, and his connection to Baba Yaga is just too good of a tale to pass up. The rest is a series of Koshchei’s adventures and quests when he was prideful. And isn’t great to have a story with so few preconceived notions?

That said, this book was a "cut above" even for these three talented creators.
Koshchei returned to the world and became a soldier again. They beat him near to death and leave him in the woods. The Outerverse. As a result, here’s your spoiler warning. Accordingly, much of his story concerns his tumultuous relationship with Baba Yaga, including what happened to them after Darkness Calls.

Like I said, the opening of the comic reminded me of Like “Frankenstein Underground” before it, “Koshchei the Deathless” shows just how far we can stray from Hellboy’s story, and yet still feel like a part of the Hellboy Universe. After a battle with Hellboy leaves her with the loss of an eye and weakened power, The Baba Yaga contracts one of her deadliest warrior: Koshchei the Deathless. Hellboy himself is a side character in this, but the action focuses on Koshchei, and you need not have completed the Hellboy canon to appreciate this story. But probably if You read any Hellboy comics before You know this, for me, as a newbie (and mythology fan) it is truly impressive.

Abe Sapien, Hellboy’s pal at the B.P.R.D., the fish-man with the really iconic design, makes perfect sense as a spin-off. This isn’t a wildly important story in the grand scheme of the Hellboy universe, but it’s fascinating and well-told. The story of this comic is very well put together and it is nicely articulated as well. Koshchei the Deathless is having drinks with Hellboy in Hell, telling him his life story.

It’s one of the most meticulously crafted culling of stories in modern media with epic upon epic nestled against the mundane like two characters reliving their past in a bar in Hell. He is quite literally deathless as he cannot be killed due to his soul being separate from his body.


I mean, if you think of the spin-offs that existed ten years ago (“Abe Sapien,” “Lobster Johnson,” “Witchfinder”), they were all pretty straightforward, marketable projects.

As his fame spread he married the daughter of a king, but the princess resented being forced to marry a commoner. They beat him near to death and leave him in the woods. Mignola writes this stuff, but Stenbeck has the challenge of pulling it off, and boy did he ever succeed.In the second half of the issue, there was another bit of retelling.

Mike Mignola is best when telling this kind of story, full of passing allusions to old folktales and his own intricate mythology, dripping with dream logic, and pervaded by a gorgeous sadness and desolate remorse. Long time ago that I felt the comic book magic with an adventure "from the pages of Hellboy". This isn’t a wildly important story in the grand A terrific standalone Hellboy story.
