Frances "Gidget" Lawrence lives with her widowed college professor father in Southern California. Gidget was based on the 1959 movie of the same name.

An aspiring actress moves from her hometown of Brewster, New York, to try to make it big in New York City, having to take several offbeat "temp" jobs to support herself in between her various auditions and bit parts. She also receives moral instruction from her father and gains wisdom from her experiences. The series was produced by original Gidget series producer Harry Ackerman and was launched after the made-for-television film Gidget's Summer Reunion, starring Caryn Richman as Gidget, aired in 1985 After spending the last two years in Europe as an exchange student, Gidget returns home to California only to discover that things have changed.
