A very useful and complete reference. Practical English Usage. This is because it doesn't treat grammar as a meaning-making resource but rather a set of prescriptive rules that do not necessarily reflect real language in use. This is supposedly to be a grammar/ style type of a book, boring. A life-saver for a teacher not sure about certain grammar points.Widely held to be the "Bible" of English Language Teaching, Swan's book is useful as a reference but not the be-all-and-end-all that many people assume. He has had extensive experience with adult learners, and has worked with teachers in many countries. However, one thing I like about Swan's book is its dictionary-style index, making it fairly easy to locate the grammar point in question. Now revised and updated for the fourth edition, it answers the questions that teachers and learners ask about English grammar and vocabulary with clear, corpus-informed explanations and examples.Practical English Usage is recommended for any teacher, trainee teacher, or advanced-level student looking for answers to questions about the English language. This book is one of the most practical grammars which I've read. Michael’s interests include pedagogic grammar, mother-tongue influence in second language acquisition, and the relationship between applied linguistic theory and classroom language-teaching practice.

The book is very useful and quite detailed. Written by a British writer, it's mainly about British English.I don't know if you ever really "read" a reference book like this, but it was invaluable during my CELTA studies last summer and continues to be very useful.Essential for non-native and native speakers alike. I would have rated it 5 stars.
