Saskatoon Historical Fencing, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. LGBTQ2+ communities in the city were taking to the streets decades before official recognition, with organizing, activism and community-building always at the heart of Pride.Despite its smaller population among urban centres in Canada, Saskatoon has always been a home to robust community-based work. The Zodiac Friendship Society was formed in 1972 as one of Canada’s first LGBTQ2+ community organizations, providing social activities, combatting discrimination and encouraging broader acceptance of gender and sexually diverse identities. The Gay Community Centre of Saskatoon, created in 1975 as a gathering space and services hub, was called “one of the biggest gay centres in the country” by the Body Politic, Canada’s first significant LGBTQ2+ periodical. At that time, activism group Saskatoon Gay Action wrote a letter to city council asking for one week in August to be designated “Gay Pride Week.” That request was rejected, and council wouldn’t approve a proclamation of “Gay Pride Day,” until more than two decades later. But even without an official declaration, people still participated in Saskatoon’s first Pride celebration in 1973. Because many of the materials are rare and fragile, Local History items are for in-house use only. There is evidence suggesting this area has been continuously inhabited for the last 11,000 years.
